2NT Opening Bid

The opening bid of 1NT shows a balanced hand 12 –14 HCP (Acol) or 15-17 (Standard). In both systems, an opening bid of 2NT is much stronger and shows around 20 – 22 HCP. The hand need not be quite as balanced as a INT opening bid, so it may hold 2 doubletons for example, or even a singleton Ace. It's always important to make the bid which best describes your hand to partner. 2NT is a limit bid, which conveys a clear description of the point count and shape of the hand.
